These brand new pieces of Ocean Jasper were unearthed recently in Madagascar. Considered “8th Vein” they are some of the best to come out of the Marovato region.

These microstructures formed during the alteration of former tuffs or rhyolites, accompanied by extensive deposition of SiO2 (silicification). Ocean Jasper only comes from one place in the world, northwestern Madagascar in the Analalava district of the Sofia region in the former province of Mahajanga.

The ore is found in a remote location on the northwest coast of Madagascar near the town of Ambolobozo. The mine is only accessible at low tide and the jasper is carried by ox- driven carts to small boats, which sail to the nearest town; from there, it is shipped to the factory.

Ocean Jasper is an orbicular chalcedony found only along the northwestern coast of Madagascar. It was discovered in October 1999 by Paul Obeniche after years of unsuccessful searching.

As one of the many types of jasper, ocean jasper is a member of the quartz family. Its high mineral silica content accounts for the specks of shimmering druzy quartz often found in ocean jasper. Although this crystal is more commonly found in white, green and brown, ocean jasper stones are sometimes also found in black, blue, red, pink, orange, yellow and gray.

Another signature of ocean jasper stone is the intricate patterning seen in the crystal. This includes orb-like shapes alongside other patterns and strips of colour – hence the name, orbicular ocean jasper.
